Destination Overview

Experience Kandy

Why Visit Kandy?

Discover Kandy, one of Sri Lanka’s most fascinating destinations, where centuries of royal history meet living Buddhist traditions, vibrant cultural performances and the natural beauty of the central highlands. Surrounded by green hills and centred around the picturesque Kandy Lake, this historic city offers travellers an unforgettable introduction to Sri Lankan culture.

Once the last capital of the Sinhala kings, Kandy is home to the renowned Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the spectacular annual Esala Perahera. Beyond its religious landmarks, visitors can explore botanical gardens, forest trails, traditional markets, tea experiences and the artistic heritage of the Kandyan kingdom.

Whether you are planning a cultural holiday, a scenic hill-country journey or a private tour through Sri Lanka, Kandy deserves a place on your itinerary.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Located within the historic royal complex, the temple continues to play an important role in Sri Lankan religious and cultural life.

Visitors should dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees.

How Long Should You Spend in Kandy?

1–2 nights is ideal.

One full day covers the major highlights. Two nights allow time for Peradeniya, cultural experiences and a slower exploration of the city. With three nights, you can slow down and include more of the surrounding region. Consider adding a guided village experience, a visit to a tea estate, extra time in the gardens or the three-temple heritage route.

Best Time to Visit Kandy

Kandy can be visited throughout the year.

December to April: Often a comfortable period for exploring the city, visiting temples and gardens, and continuing into the hill country.

May to September: A useful period for cultural travel and combining Kandy with other parts of Sri Lanka, but expect variable weather and occasional showers. The Esala Perahera may fall within this period.

October to November: Inter-monsoonal weather can bring heavier showers and thunderstorms. Keep your schedule flexible and allow extra time for road journeys.

If attending the Esala Perahera is a priority, choose your travel dates according to the confirmed festival calendar rather than the general seasonal pattern.

Kandy Entrance Fees

Kandy itself has no general destination entrance fee. Individual attractions such as the Temple of the Tooth (~ $9), Botanical Gardens (~$10) and museums have separate entrance charges.

Where to Stay

Stay around Kandy Lake, the city Center or on the surrounding hills. Hilltop hotels are particularly attractive for travelers seeking views and a quieter atmosphere.
